DVLA Fitness to drive medicals
Further information if you have received a letter from the DVLA requesting you have a fitness to drive medical.
- OxMed GP provides DVLA medical assessments on behalf of the DVLA.
- A medical is arranged when the DVLA requires further medical information to assess whether a driver meets the required medical standards to hold a driving licence. This may be required to allow a driver to continue to drive or, in certain circumstances, be required as part of the process of reapplying for a licence after it has been revoked.
- The assessment commonly includes a review of your medical history and a clinical examination.
- Depending on the reason for the medical, you may also be required to provide a blood or urine sample.
- Where tests are required, the samples are sent to a specialist laboratory appointed by the DVLA for analysis. The laboratory reports the test results directly to the DVLA.
- The DVLA then assesses the medical evidence to determine whether you meet the required standards of fitness to drive and makes the decision regarding your driving licence. OxMed GP provides the medical assessment and sample collection; the DVLA remains responsible for the final fitness-to-drive decision.
- These medicals are separate to the usual statutory medicals required to drive certain vehicles eg HGV/PSV – we do not provide this service
